April 3

Have you ever heard of martenitsas?  I had never heard of them either until I started to search for ideas about Bulgaria for my Misson Adventure kids.  The missionaries we help support as a church are serving in Bulgaria and we are learning about some of the customs of the Bulgarian people.

People celebrate Spring for the entire month of March and they use martenitsas for this celebration.  Basically they are almost anything made only of red and white and used for decorating from what I could learn.

I put out all types of red and white supplies and let my kids design and make whatever they wanted.  It was interesting to see what they came up with.  Actually only one little girl wanted to try to make something like the photos I showed them.  The boys were into using pipecleaners to spell their first names.

We talked about the difference in how we celebrate various occasions and we shared some of the ideas of our spring.  The beautiful blossoms that are out early added to our discussion.

God made each of us so different and it is amazing how our cultures vary.  Yet, our God is the same today, yesterday and forever.  What a blessing!

Father, thank you for the differences among us and thank you most of all that you never change. Amen.
